Immigration Policy by deaddays Immigration Policy by deaddays
Hey boys and girls! It's time for current events! YAY! (Don't worry, a new Dead Days is coming soon)
Alright, so the Collegian (the college newspaper I illustrate for) is back in full swing and this is the first piece of the new year.
Ya see, PRESIDENT BUSH (holds for applause... ha) wants to pass this new immigration policy in America that basically allows many illegal immigrants in the states to keep their jobs and not get deported back to Mex, thus allowing those workers to possibly apply for permanent residency and patching up relations with Mexico.
The Problem with that is that, the author of the piece wrote, is that it helps kill our economy! One of the reasons is because that something like $10 Billion is being sent OUT of the U.S. to the immigrants families back home each year! That's $10 Billion no longer in the U.S.
This was really a tough piece for me to do, because for years, my parents (and half my brothers and sisters) were illegal immigrants out of Mexico doing just that, and without that, my family wouldn't have eaten. So I sucked it up and stayed subjective without being cynical. I'm really happy with the piece. It's almost like a infographic! It's fun to do things with political cartoons other than one old guy in a suit talking to another old guy in a suit. Anyway, Thanks for reading!

The war in Iraq, nay, over the top milirary spending in general, wastes far more US money than what legal/illegal mexicans send back to their countries. However, like you, my parents too were illegal immigrant (from guatemala and el salvador, respectively) from when the were 9 or so until my fathe was 16 or so and my mother in her early 20's. However, wile I do feel some sympathy for those who cross illegal, it s still a crime and should not be done. It not only has caused problems for the US but for themselves and their old countries and families too. You think a bit of money honestly helps countries like Mexico? The US needs to stay out of Latin American poltics and the vast majority of pepl in countries like Mexico actually need to start having a voice if change is ever to make countries like Mexico livable for the average mexican.

Come on guys, he has nothing left to do, think about mexicans ok? to enter in USA a mexican have to do many things to get in, an American don't have to do so many things to get in Mexico, and have to do too much things because the fear to terrorists, so I think there's some justice here, not complete but there's. Long time ago Mexico supports USA allowing american trademarks like mcdonalds, burger king, kimberly clark, etc. giving them lands. So, let's be realistic, you need us and we need you, that's the true, I'm mexican and I'm realistic, so let's live in peace, damn!

As has possibly been pointed out, these people take the shit jobs that your average little "Joe White" sees as being beneath him. Your industries also make over a 100 billion in profits from this arrangement so them sending money home to keep their families alive isn't really an honest assesment considering the massive profits made from the cheap labor. Bottom line, Dubya doesn't give a fuck about Mexicans, he's simply doing this because it has no chance of being passed and it LOOKS like he's a benevolent guy, instead of a racist right-wing oil-puppet that gets his strings pulled by his Daddy and his Daddy'd friends.

This is simply another piece of crap legislation to take people's eyes and minds of the real issues. It causes people to take on racism veiled as " economic concern" but the result is the same for the people on the recieving end.

Bring in Unions and better standards and then all employers will be accountable, that way no one can bitch about immigrants "stealing" their jobs.

Nice image, well done, like the construction, good idea to keep it black and white, figures work well.

So.. did you draw this? You refer in your description to someone else as "the author of the piece". Or did you do this drawing for the article?

People don't realize that having labor laws apply to illegal immigrants will force American companies to pay them the same wage, thus removing any further compelling reason to hire immigrants over American workers.

Hey nitemaregargoyle,

1) Yep, I drew the piece. when I said the "author" of the piece, I meant the author of the STORY my art ran with. The cartoon is all me.

2) Yep, removing the reason to hire immigrants over Americans is a pretty good upside to the whole thing. It's really hard to know though if the pros outweigh the cons. compelling arguments can be made for both sides... Great point though! Thanks for the comment!

Actually that's a pretty bad assumption. 10 billion dollars going into mexico means basically nothing. Why? America buys 80% of mexican exports anyway, so it doesn't make much of a difference either way. How this will increase illegal immigration is beyond me. It's inane to beleive that the economy will go down because of this. Mostly because 10 years ago we had the largest influx of illegal immigrants and our economy sky rocketed. What it can possibly do is supress the labor force. By bringing illegal immigrants to do a job while people are protesting. But that is not that likely. Basically Bush's policy doesn't go far enough I think. It needs to open up more green cards distrubuted a year and bring down the cost.

Anyway, great picture, if only I could draw like that, but I won't get nowhere if I don't practice. I can understand with this picture because thats something simiular that old Big-ears Blair is doing. Not only does the immigrants money go out of the country, but here in the uk, the immigrants have more rights than everyone else. They can get away with murder with just a slap on the wrist as a conciquence, if someone who actually lives in the uk and does the same thing, life in prison, no second thoughts.
I like the way that dollars are falling out of Uncle.S' pockets as he falls and the way he appears to be moving fast because hes slightly burly. Another amasing pic. Keep it up!

does he have a single good idea in that fat little head of his? or is he just intent on completely ruining this country...its had problems in the past, but weve been able to overcome them. it just looks like hes aiming for destruction. goodbye rome, hello NEW Mexico! (not saying that we'll have more mexicans than americans, just that america would much more closely resemble mexico's economic status if he keeps screwing things up.....)

bush's immigration policy is ridiculous, though i think he proposed it because he knew it would be turned down, just so he could still say to minorities, 'hey, i tried'.

nice work.

While I do think Bush was a lot better choice then Gore, I hate his immigration policy. Him and Fox need to stop sleeping together and tighten our borders.

One of the few policitical pieces you've done that I can side with. (although our economy didn't start to decline under Bush)

Soon anyone who isn't cristian or catholic will be pushed into camps where they may consentrate on why they do not follow bush's new order haha. It really upsets me that he wats to change the constitution to make it unconstitutinal for same sex mariges CHURCH AND STATE ARE SUPOSED TO BE SEPERATE!! Sorry gettin all heated up and before I vent I better stop and syayou did a great job, it's hard going against your own will :-/

I hear ya Skantfa,

It's funny, I've never had to "vent" over a president more than I have in the last 3 1/2 years. The thing is that he's most likely gonna get re-elected. I dunno about these Democratic candidates (I'm democrat by the way). Do they have what it takes to bring this Bush of a man down? I guess we'll see. And thanks for the comment on the piece! I'm not all that into all the CROSSHATCHING they do on the political cartoons, I mean, sure it looks great, but does it HAVE to be that way? I'm betting on a "NO." Well, I entered 3 different political cartoon contests for my work in 2003, I guess we'll know the answer if I place in any of them! Later!

Thanks for the "professional" compliment! Man, it's not easy to stay professional and biased all the time. Sometimes I have to wrestle with it for an hour or so before I finally go, " FINE! I JUST WON'T DO THE DAMN DRAWING." Then I crumble, "Career John" takes control and razzledazzle happens. *sigh* Then I do a Dead Days bitching about something stupid like WETNAPS in order to cleans my thoughts. That seems to be how I'll work for the rest of my career. :D Thanks again Trip!

lol. that's so true. political cartoons are ALWAYS of men is suits. It gets quite boring after a while. And I wouldn't really know about this thing, since I hardly follow politics in my own country let alone yours. Either way, cool lookin' cartoon, and I think it's really cool that you do comics for your school's newspaper. I think that would be fun, except I could never do it, since I'm quite embarassed of my art, and it hardly ever turns out the way I immagine it. Oh well, it will only get better in time. Btw, you don't have a tablet do you, cuz your art always looks very smooth.

I draw my cartoons with pencils and ink, but YES, I do use photoshop to draw in some cases, not just color. For example, the ARROWS in this piece are all photoshop. Thanks again for the comment!

If there's one thing I love about your political cartoons is, the fact that you don't bluntly yell out "THIS SUCKS" or something along those lines. I HATE reading some of these political cartoons where they blast one country/continent/idea out of the water.

My family is from all around the world and its difficult to enjoy or to think of these cartoons when they're either bashing my native country or where I am now. So it's either "Insert country's name here SUCKS!" or "AMERICA SUCKS!" Making the issue black and white.

I like how you make it so you show your discomfort of the idea, but don't fully put it down because you don't agree with it. (That, and there's humor in it. Which is always a plus. =) )

Hey thanks Andre-chan!
Yeah, I try to stay biased, as I know that while there's half the crowd agreeing with one side, there's usually just as big of a crowd agreeing with the other. So while my cartoons are usually leaning toward one of the sides in order to make a point, I consider the other side just as much. It's acutally REALLY hard to balance the two but it usually works out! Thanks for the comment!

Ha ha! That's the cool thing I usually see in cartoonists, IMPROVISATION! Make a ink smear, turn it into a shadow! Put in the wrong wording, make a joke around it! Someone pissed you off, you can kill-well...that really has nothing to do with cartooning....ignore that last bit....^^;
